The Open University of Sri Lanka offers Certificate courses, Diploma Courses, Advance Diploma Courses and Degree Courses from its four faculties of Education, Engineering Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. The University is equipped to support Postgraduate Research Studies leading to Master of Phillosophy and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The university imparts instruction to students by distance-teaching methodology. This has opened the opportunity for adults who are employed and even for students who are not selected to the conventional universities to study by paying a tuition fee. Foundation level courses offer the opportunity for students who have passed their O/L to carry on higher studies.

The Open Uniersity of Sri Lanka (OUSL) is well recognized as any other National University in Sri Lanka. It has the same academic status as all the other universities.

There are no specific entry qualifications to enrol as a student unless specified. Any person who is above 18 years can enrol as a student for studies.

The study system is based on instructional material including printed material and audio visual aids. day schools, tutor clinics, laboratory work, field work and self assesments integrated to develop the skills of a student.
